N Stream 2 spox: EU must focus on local projs as sanction threaten

MOSCOW, Jul 25 (PRIME) -- The E.U. must focus on support of regional energy projects because of looming U.S. sanctions against European companies, a spokesperson for operator of Russian gas pipeline project Nord Stream 2 told PRIME on Tuesday.

“At a time when European energy companies face a U.S. sanctions threat aimed at a forced raise of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from the U.S. to Europe, E.U. institutes must focus on support of European energy projects, rather than making their fulfillment more complicated,” the official said.

An energy workgroup of the European Council will discuss a mandate for the European Commission to negotiate a special legal framework for the pipeline with Russia on Tuesday.

The U.S. House of Representatives can consider a bill on sanctions targeted at Russia, Iran and North Korea later on Tuesday.
